Before you begin to build your robot, it is important to become familiar with
the different Lego parts in the Mindstorms kit.

Beams, bricks and plates are the structural components.
Beams come in a variety of lengths and have holes in them to insert axles.
Plates are flat pieces that also come in a variety of lengths and widths. |
Axles are used for gears and
wheels. There are a variety of axle lengths from 2 Lego units long to 12
Lego units. |
| Bushings go on axles to hold them in place. Half bushings,
which are also small pulleys, have more friction
than the full bushings and provide a tighter grip. |
| There is a variety of tee fittings and elbows.
These connect axles and connector pegs. |
There are a number of different sized wheels for your
robot from small to large. Tank treads
are also available. |
| The Lego kit comes with many different types of gears.
| Sensors are what gives
your robot information about the world. |
Motors are what make your
robot move. |
| The RCX is the brain of your
robot. It holds a computer program that reads sensor input and controls
the robot's motors. |
